Why BMI Is Just a Starting Point

Body Mass Index (BMI) is probably the world's most-used health metric. Your doctor measures it. Insurance companies use it. Fitness apps obsess over it. But here's what most people don't know: BMI was invented in the 1830s by a mathematician — not a doctor — and it was never intended to measure individual health.

What BMI Actually Measures

BMI is simply your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in meters (kg/m²). That's it. It doesn't measure fat, muscle, bone density, or any direct health marker whatsoever.

The Problems With BMI

BMI has several well-documented limitations that scientists and clinicians increasingly acknowledge:

  • It can't distinguish fat from muscle. A 100kg elite rugby player and a sedentary 100kg person have the same BMI — but vastly different health profiles.
  • It ignores fat distribution. Where you carry fat matters enormously. Central (belly) fat is far more dangerous than fat on your hips and thighs.
  • It's not equally valid across ethnicities. Research shows that people of Asian descent face higher health risks at lower BMI values, while some populations appear healthier at higher BMIs.
  • Age matters. Body composition changes with age — older adults naturally have more fat relative to muscle, even at the same BMI.

BMI is a quick screening tool — nothing more. It's useful for spotting broad trends in populations, and it's a reasonable starting conversation with your doctor. But it is absolutely not a verdict on your personal health.

The best approach is to use BMI alongside waist circumference, body fat percentage, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. Together, these give a comprehensive picture that BMI alone simply cannot provide.

And remember: how you feel matters. Your energy levels, sleep quality, strength, endurance, and mental wellbeing are all indicators of health that no formula can capture.
