🏆 Understanding Age Calculations

Everything you need to know about using this calculator and the math behind it.

How it Works

This tool calculates the exact duration between your birth date and the current date (or a specific target date). It factors in leap years and the varying lengths of months to provide an accurate reading in years, months, days, hours, and minutes.

The Formula

Age = Current Date - Birth Date. Time representations like hours and minutes are calculated by multiplying total days by 24 and 1440 respectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is exact age calculated across leap years? +

Age is calculated by counting completed years, then months, then days between the birth date and the target date. Leap years (divisible by 4, except centuries not divisible by 400) add a day to February. Our calculator accounts for this using the Gregorian calendar system. People born on February 29 officially celebrate on either Feb 28 or March 1 in non-leap years, depending on jurisdiction.

What is the difference between chronological and biological age? +

Chronological age is the number of years since birth — what this calculator computes. Biological age reflects the actual condition of your body and cells, which can be younger or older than chronological age based on lifestyle, genetics, environment, and health. Research shows regular exercise, good sleep, low stress, and healthy diet can make your biological age significantly younger than your birth certificate suggests.

Why do some countries calculate age differently? +

In East Asian cultures (particularly Korea), the traditional system considers a person 1 year old at birth and adds a year on every New Year, rather than on birthdays. South Korea officially moved to the international age system in 2023. Some cultures start counting from conception (Korean "Korean age"). Japan used a traditional system until 1950. The Western/international system (counting completed years from birth) is now standard globally for legal and official purposes.

What legal ages should I know about in the US? +

Key legal age milestones in the US: 16 (driving in most states), 17 (military enlistment with parental consent), 18 (vote, sign contracts, adult status, buy tobacco products), 21 (purchase alcohol), 25 (rent a car without surcharge for most companies, full brain development), 59½ (penalty-free 401k withdrawals), 62 (earliest Social Security benefits), 65 (Medicare eligibility), 67 (full Social Security retirement age for those born after 1960).

Can I calculate the age of historical figures or past dates? +

Yes — you can enter any birth date and a past or future target date. This lets you calculate how old someone was at a historical event, or how old a child will be in a future year. The calculator works for dates going back centuries using the Gregorian proleptic calendar, though historical accuracy before 1582 (when the Gregorian calendar was adopted) may vary slightly by region.
