🛍️ Know Your Real Savings
Everything you need to know about using this calculator and shopping smarter on Black Friday.
How it Works
Enter the original price and advertised discount for up to four items. The calculator sums what you'd pay for each and shows your total dollar savings plus a single blended discount rate across the whole cart.
The Formula
Item Paid = Price × (1 − Discount%). Effective Discount = (Total Original − Total Paid) ÷ Total Original × 100.
Pro Tip
A single 70%-off item can make a whole cart look like a huge win. Always check the blended effective discount, not the biggest number on any one tag, before deciding your trip was worth it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is 'effective discount' and how is it different from an item's discount? +
Your effective discount is the total dollars saved divided by the total original price across every item in your cart. If you buy one item at 70% off and three items at 10% off, your effective (blended) discount will be much closer to 10% than to 70%, because the low-discount items dominate the total spend. It's the number that actually reflects your wallet, not the flashiest single-item percentage.
Are Black Friday discounts calculated off the real original price? +
Not always. Some retailers inflate the 'was' price shortly before a sale so the advertised discount looks larger than the real year-round savings. Use price-tracking tools or browser extensions that show historical pricing before trusting a listed discount percentage at face value.
Is Black Friday or Cyber Monday better for savings? +
It depends on the category. Black Friday traditionally has deeper discounts on electronics, TVs, and in-store doorbusters, while Cyber Monday tends to focus on online-only deals for software, smaller electronics, and apparel. Many retailers now run the same sale prices across the entire week, so comparing specific product prices matters more than the calendar date.
How do I know if a Black Friday deal is actually worth buying? +
Only count it as savings if it's something you already planned to buy at some point. A 50%-off item you wouldn't otherwise purchase isn't a $50 saving, it's a $50 expense. Run your real shopping list through this calculator to see your true total spend and blended discount, not just the percentages on the tags.
Should I use a credit card for Black Friday purchases? +
A rewards or cashback credit card can add another 1-5% in value on top of the sale discount, provided you pay the balance in full. Carrying a balance at typical 20%+ APR into December will erase your savings within a month or two, so only use credit if you're certain you can pay it off on the next statement.
How many items can I compare with this calculator? +
This tool lets you enter up to four items with individual original prices and discount percentages at once, which covers most single shopping-trip comparisons. For a larger cart, group similar items together (for example, average the discount across several clothing items) and enter them as one combined line.
