How it Works
Enter your average score in each grading category along with the weight your teacher assigns to it. The calculator multiplies each category average by its weight and sums the results into your overall final grade.
The Formula
Final Grade = Σ (Category Average × Category Weight%). For example: (90% × 20%) + (85% × 15%) + (80% × 50%) + (95% × 15%) = 85.25%.
Pro Tip
Focus your study effort on the highest-weighted category first. Raising a 50%-weighted exam average by 5 points moves your final grade far more than raising a 15%-weighted quiz average by 5 points.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a weighted grade different from a simple average? +
A simple average treats every assignment equally. A weighted grade groups assignments into categories and gives each one a percentage of your final grade, so a category worth 50% counts far more than one worth 5%, regardless of assignment count.
What if my category weights don't add up to 100%? +
Most syllabi list weights that sum to exactly 100%. If yours don't, this calculator normalizes the result by dividing the weighted sum by the total weight entered, so you still get a meaningful percentage — but double check your syllabus for the intended weighting.
How do I find my category average before entering it? +
Add up points earned across every assignment in that category, divide by total possible points, and multiply by 100. For example, homework scores of 18/20, 15/20, 19/20 average to (18+15+19)/(20+20+20) = 86.7%.
Can I use this to figure out what I need on my final exam? +
Yes, indirectly. Enter your current averages for every category except exams, then adjust the exam average field until the final grade result matches your target grade. This shows roughly what score you'd need on remaining assessments.
Does this calculator account for dropped lowest scores? +
No. This calculator works from category averages you've already computed. If your teacher drops the lowest homework or quiz score, exclude that score before calculating your category average, then enter the adjusted average here.
Why do I only have four categories to enter? +
Homework, quizzes, exams, and participation cover the most common grading structure. If your class has fewer categories, set unused categories' weight to 0 so they don't affect your result.
