Why BMR Is the Foundation of Every Calorie Plan
BMR typically accounts for 60-70% of the total calories a person burns in a day, which is why it's the starting point for nearly every weight-loss, maintenance, or muscle-gain plan. You can't accurately set a calorie target without first knowing this baseline number — everything else (TDEE, deficit, surplus) is built on top of it.
BMR is driven mainly by body size, muscle mass, sex, and age. Larger bodies and higher muscle mass burn more calories at rest because muscle tissue is metabolically active even when you're not moving — it takes energy just to maintain it. Common Misunderstandings About BMR
- BMR is not "how much I should eat." It's a floor, not a target — eating at BMR alone (with no activity added) is usually too low for most people.
- Crash diets tank BMR. Severe long-term calorie restriction can lower BMR by preserving less muscle and triggering metabolic adaptation, making future weight loss harder.
- Muscle matters more than the scale. Two people at the identical weight can have BMRs that differ by 150-250 calories purely based on body composition.
