VO2 max ("V" for volume, "O2" for oxygen, "max" for maximum) reflects how efficiently your heart, lungs, and muscles work together to deliver and consume oxygen when you push yourself to your limit. How It's Measured — and Estimated
The gold-standard test happens in a lab: you run or cycle at increasing intensity while wearing a mask that measures oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide output directly. Since most people don't have lab access, field tests and formulas estimate VO2 max instead. The most common are the Cooper 12-minute run test (distance covered predicts VO2 max) and heart-rate-based estimates used by fitness watches, which are convenient but typically less accurate than direct testing.

Suppose a runner covers 2,800 meters in the 12-minute Cooper test: VO2 max = (2,800 − 504.9) ÷ 44.73 ≈ 51.3 mL/kg/min. For a 30-year-old man, that lands solidly in the "good" to "excellent" fitness category — well above the roughly 38-42 mL/kg/min average for his age group.

Can You Raise It?

Studies commonly show gains of 10-20% over several months of consistent training, though genetics ultimately caps how high any individual can go. VO2 max also declines roughly 1% per year after your mid-20s to 30s if you stop training, making it a useful long-term fitness benchmark to track.
